When temperatures climb, staying cool and hydrated becomes more than a matter of comfort. It becomes an important part of staying safe.

Extreme heat can affect anyone, but some people face a greater risk of heat-related illness and dehydration. This includes older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, people with chronic medical conditions or who take certain medications, individuals without reliable access to cooling, and those who may have difficulty recognizing or communicating that they are becoming overheated or dehydrated.

At Canaan Cares, our mission is to help individuals with all abilities live with greater confidence, independence, and purpose. During periods of extreme heat, families, caregivers, and support professionals can play an important role by watching for warning signs and helping individuals take simple precautions.

Know the Signs of Overheating and Dehydration

Heat-related illness can develop quickly, so recognizing changes in how someone looks, feels, or behaves is important.

According to the Risk Busters: Extreme Heat Edition resource, common warning signs include:

  • Muscle cramps
  • Excessive sweating
  • Confusion or unusual drowsiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • A rapid or weak pulse
  • Dark-colored or strong-smelling urine

If you support someone who may have difficulty identifying or communicating discomfort, paying attention to changes in behavior, energy level, and usual routines can be especially important.

Make a Heat-Safety Check Part of the Day

During very hot weather, a quick check-in can make a meaningful difference. Ask:

  • Are they drinking enough water throughout the day? Encourage regular water intake rather than waiting until they feel thirsty.
  • Do they have access to a cool environment? Air-conditioned spaces can provide important relief. If air conditioning isn’t available at home, consider a local cooling center or heat-relief shelter.
  • Do they know how to stay cool? Some individuals may need reminders, assistance, or additional support adjusting their routines during unusually hot weather.
  • Are they showing signs of heat stress or dehydration? Changes such as dizziness, confusion, unusual sleepiness, nausea, or a weak or rapid pulse deserve attention.

Everyday Ways to Stay Safer in Extreme Heat

A few adjustments to the daily routine can help reduce heat exposure.

Encourage individuals to drink water regularly and increase their fluid intake during hot weather. The Extreme Heat resource also recommends limiting sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages and avoiding hot, heavy meals that can increase body heat.

Clothing matters, too. Lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing can help people stay more comfortable. When going outdoors, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat can provide additional protection.

Whenever possible, schedule outdoor activities away from the hottest parts of the day and spend more time in air-conditioned spaces.

And one rule is absolute: never leave a person or pet inside a parked vehicle, even with a window cracked.

Temperatures inside a vehicle can become life-threatening within minutes.

Supporting Independence While Staying Safe

Heat safety doesn’t have to mean giving up favorite activities or independence. Often, it means adapting the day. An outdoor activity might be moved to a cooler time. A water bottle can become part of the daily routine. A caregiver can offer reminders to drink throughout the day, help identify a comfortable indoor activity during peak heat, or watch for changes that the individual may not recognize themselves.

Canaan Cares provides services including Independent Living, Day & Community Programs, and Respite Care, with a focus on helping individuals with all abilities live safely while maintaining independence and quality of life.

During extreme heat, that balance between independence, preparation, and attentive support becomes especially valuable.

A Little Preparation Can Go a Long Way

Hot days are easier to manage when there is a plan before temperatures soar. Families and caregivers can make sure water is readily available, identify air-conditioned locations and nearby cooling resources, adjust outdoor schedules, and make heat-safety check-ins part of the routine.

The Risk Busters: Extreme Heat Edition also points families and providers toward additional heat-safety and dehydration resources from the California Department of Developmental Services, CDC, Ready.gov, and American Red Cross.

At Canaan Cares, we’re committed to helping individuals and families enjoy greater independence while staying safe, supported, and connected in their communities.
