Resource Alert: Phishing Scams Alert

We’ve recently become aware of phishing and fraudulent emails circulating within the Regional Center community, including messages that may appear to come from familiar organizations or staff members.

These scams can be convincing. A message may use a familiar name, organization, or email address that looks almost legitimate while asking you to provide personal information, send money, purchase or donate items, click a link, or respond to an unusual request.

Before you respond, take a closer look.

  • Check the sender’s full email address, not just the displayed name.
  • Be cautious of unexpected requests for money, gift cards, donations, items, passwords, or personal information.
  • Don’t click unfamiliar links or open unexpected attachments.
  • If something feels unusual, contact the organization directly using a phone number or website you already know and trust.
  • Report suspicious messages as spam or phishing and block the sender.

When in doubt, verify before you reply or click.
Scammers often rely on urgency and familiarity to get people to act quickly. Taking an extra minute to check a message can help protect you, your family, and our broader community.

At Canaan Cares, we believe access to clear, trustworthy information is an important part of making informed decisions and advocating for yourself and those you support. By sharing resources and important community updates, we hope to help individuals with all abilities and their families feel more confident, informed, and connected as they navigate the services and supports available to them.

Please share this reminder with individuals, families, caregivers, and others in our community who may benefit.
